      We Came West

    by François Magal — 2019

        Creative documentary — 45 min — DCP
        English with French subtitles
Distribution visa no. 150.416 issued on 24/06/2019
With the support of the SCAM, the Charles Engelhard Foundation, and Le Fresnoy, National Studio of Contemporary Arts
        Synopsis
There's Rick Bass the writer, Robyn King the civil rights activist, and Scott Daily who also aspired to be a writer — this is the story of all three. It's also the story of a territory blanketed in snow six months a year, a remote and wild place: Yaak Valley, Montana. The encounter — like falling in love — between the three of them and that place.

      About

Founded in 2016, WE FILM is a production company based in the Indian Ocean, dedicated to creating art-house feature films, shorts, and documentaries for cinema and television.

We specialize in auteur-driven cinema, producing films with a bold artistic vision and a distinct identity. Regardless of genre or format, our work is defined by close collaboration with writers and directors, ensuring they have the creative and logistical support to fully realize their cinematic ambitions.

WE FILM has co-produced films with partners in Germany, South Africa, Mauritius, and Madagascar. Our work has been acquired by major broadcasters such as Arte, France Télévisions, and TV5Monde, as well as international platforms like Tënk, DAFilms, UniversCiné, and TV5MondePlus.

Our films have been showcased at leading international festivals, including the Berlin International Film Festival, Toronto, Rotterdam, Sarajevo, Namur, FIDMarseille, IDFA, Jihlava, Visions du Réel, Annecy, and Clermont-Ferrand.

Our latest feature, Disco Afrika: A Malagasy Story, premiered in the Generation competition at the Berlinale, where it received an Honourable Mention from the AG Kino – Gilde e.V. jury (Association of German Art House Cinemas).

The documentary In the Billowing Night (Lèv la tèt Dann Fénwar) was selected for the César Awards, screened at over 50 international festivals, and received multiple honors, including the prestigious Doc Alliance Award.

Additionally, our short film Blaké was also César-selected, winning the Grand Prix France Télévisions at the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival and earning a Prix Qualité from the CNC.

  Synopsis

In the underground parking lot of an office building, two night watchmen ensure that nothing happens to the fancy cars. The lot is empty and the night risks being long. To keep themselves company, they evoke their life philosophies, past troubles, and dreams. Vincent, the youngest of the two, is convinced that he's having a major love affair with a beautiful young woman who he accompanies to her car each night. But fantasies can have consequences, especially in an empty parking lot where dreams and reality clash.

  Synopsis

On Reunion Island, away from prying eyes, lives a family of cane cutters with Malagasy, African and Indian roots. Ten-year-old Anélia lives there with her relatives, and among them her grandmother, who communicates with their ancestors. At nightfall, while the children are playing hide and seek in the forest, a stray dog appears at the time when stray souls like to spread. The dog turns into a bird, Anélia thinks of her father who died before his time, while her grandmother organizes a great ceremony to honour the dead.

  Synopsis

A stage, a ron! Poets follow one after the other. The Creole language snaps, their feet vibrate on the ground. If poetry had this strange power to help heal the wounds of history, if it was a way of being in the world, then on Réunion Island, it would be called fonnkèr (fond'cœur / depths of heart).

  Synopsis

A white-skinned Creole woman channels the trauma of a tragic event from Réunion into her political activism. By night, through poetic acts of vandalism, she fights for the independence of this French island in the Indian Ocean. Her ideological battle does not sit well with her son, a police officer. One night, caught in the act after a final act of rebellion, the son is forced to confront his mother. In this verbal duel, violence may not come from where we expect.
